September 5, 2007: It was a power-packed evening at the JW Marriot Hotel in Bangkok, as Power Company executives from all across Asia flew in for the much recognised third annual Asian Power Awards 2007. Also known as the Oscars of the Power industry, the Asian Power Awards, serves to recognise the industry players in Asia whose efforts have stood out over the past year. Major brands in the power sector - including the Senoko Power, North Delhi Power Ltd (NDPL), GE Electric, Siemens, and Emerson - were all present under the same roof to attend the glamorous and prestigious award function in Bangkok.

 

It was a lucky night for India, when Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter (CLZS), a unit of M/s Hindustan Zinc Limited opened the score sheet for the evening, by winning the Asian Power Plant of the Year award and the Best Emissions Reduction Project in Asia Award. The award for the Best Decentralised Power Plant in Asia Award was won by the ITPL power plant (Wartsila India Limited).

 

NDPL won the Power Utility of the Year award, while Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), the state government nodal agency for renewable energy projects in Punjab, won the award for the Best ‘Green’ Power Project in Asia Award.

 

Mr M.P. Singh, Senior Manager, PEDA said, “Two hundred and thirty five tons of daily waste is put to use to create 1MW of energy. The 40-ton slurry that we are left with at the end is given to the farmers, as it makes an excellent fertilizer.”

 

During the evening’s function, Mr Arup Ghosh, Chief Operating Officer, NDPL talked of the need for power sector reforms, attributing most of their success to these reforms.

 

K-Power bagged two awards – for the Best Independent Power Producer of the Year and for Excellence in Technology Optimisation. Using GE products and services, K-Power Combined Cycle Power Plant, a new Independent Power Producer (IPP) is rapidly emerging as an innovator and leader in the Korean Market.

 

Senoko Power (Alstom Power) won the award for the Best Operation & Management Project in Asia. Mr Roy Adair, President & CEO of Senoko Power said, “These awards are a recognition of our efforts. We share a similar motto as the Olympic games – more, better and at lesser prices.”

 

The key note speaker of the evening, D.C. Choi, Facility Manager of K-power, spoke on the booming electricity demand and consumption vis-à-vis supply. Choi pointed out that the electricity demand in the Asian markets would double by 2030. In his presentation, Choi spoke about fuel prices, and growing global environmental concerns, among other key issues of the power world.

 

A panel of experts - comprising C.V.J. Varma, the President & CEO of the Council of Power Utilities, Edward K.M. Chen, Chairman of Taiwan Power Company, John Goss of Ceejay International, Lee Jang-Pyo, General Manager of International Relations Department, KEPCO, Tim Charlton, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Asian Power magazine and the AESIEAP Goldbook and Rowena Everson, Group Editor of Charlton Media Group, came to consensus on the deserving parties only after an extensive selection process that involved the solicitation of nominations from the industry.
